With the race on Bank Holiday Monday, Snetterton Circuit had arranged a test day on Sunday 3rd so we duly headed up to Norfolk for a half day session to check out the car and try a few setup changes. The weather was dry but the wind was gusting so badly around Coram it was impossible to assess the impact of our work so we settled for a time two tenths quicker than last years lap record!
Race day dawned bright and dry so we went into qualifying full of confidence - and emerged in fourth unsure where the speed had gone! Main problem was understeer, particularly at Coram but Stuart was also having to wind the brake bias to the rear to avoid locking the front brakes at Russell. The indications pointed to the front tyres having gone off - and it was too late to change now! Nick Dudfield (on new tyres) took pole by 0.49 from Anthony Dunn with Elliott Lewis third and Stuart fourth, 0.73 behind Nick.
Nick made a fair start but Anthony was away better and led the pack into Riches. Stuart missed the change to second and dropped back to fifth behind Michael Nippers. And that is how it stayed for 7 laps despite much effort from Stuart, who was working hard to pass Michael but suffering increasingly from understeer, while Elliott and Nick nipped at Anthony's heels but couldn't quite get past. On lap eight, Nick got a good run on Anthony and passed him into Seer to take the lead - briefly because Elliott tried to follow Nick through and he and Anthony touched, sending Elliott's car into a series of rolls which destroyed the car and left the rescue crews to cut him out of the wreckage. Fortunately, Elliott suffered no serious injuries, though he was kept in hospital overnight as a precaution. Anthony's car suffered only light damage but had to be towed to Parc Ferme.
Amid the carnage, out came the red flag and the result was declared after seven laps, handing the win to Anthony and leaving a disappointed Nick in second place.
Next race is at Mallory Park on May 17th - See you there.
Race Results 14 laps.
